When it comes to restoring your damaged teeth, dental crowns are the go-to solution. They not only improve the appearance of your smile but also protect and strengthen your natural teeth. However, with advancements in technology, you now have a choice between traditional crowns and same-day crowns. With both options offering unique benefits, it can be tricky to decide which one is right for you.

What Is the Difference Between a Same-day Crown and a Traditional Crown?

Traditional dental crowns have been around for decades, and the process of getting one is well-established. A traditional crown requires two separate appointments with your dentist. During the first appointment, your tooth will be prepared by removing any decayed or damaged areas and shaping it to fit the crown properly. After that, an impression of your tooth is taken using a putty-like substance which is sent to a dental lab where technicians create a permanent crown that matches the shape and color of your natural teeth. In most cases, you'll need to wear a temporary crown while waiting for the final restoration.

Same-day crowns are made using computer-aided design (CAD) technology right in your dentist's office. This eliminates the need for multiple visits, as everything can be done in just one sitting. During this visit, digital scans are taken of your mouth and then fed into CAD software which creates a 3D image of what your new crown should look like. From there, special equipment carves out an exact replica from ceramic material on-site so you can get all things done immediately! These crowns offer many benefits over traditional ones, such as convenience and time-saving, but they also come at an extra cost compared to traditional methods!

What Are the Benefits of Each Type of Crown?

Each type has its own unique benefits that patients should consider when choosing which option is best for them.

One of the main benefits of a same-day crown is convenience. With this type of crown, the entire process – from taking impressions to creating and placing the final restoration – can be done in just one appointment. This means less time spent in the dentist's chair and fewer appointments overall.

Traditional crowns, on the other hand, may require multiple visits to complete. However, they also offer some advantages over same-day crowns. For example, because traditional crowns are made in a dental lab by trained technicians, they may be more precise and aesthetically pleasing than same-day options.

Another benefit of traditional crowns is their durability. Because these restorations are made from high-quality materials such as porcelain or ceramic, they tend to last longer than same-day alternatives that are often made from resin or composite materials.

The choice between a same-day crown and a traditional crown will depend on each patient's individual needs and preferences. It's important to speak with your dentist about both options so you can make an informed decision about which type of crown is right for you.
